'A brilliant and well-written piece of work' Francesca Steyn, Head of Nursing, The Centre for Reproductive and Genetic Health
From fertility counsellor Tracey Sainsbury and Sarah Rayner (bestselling author of Making Friends with Anxiety, One Moment, One Morning and The Two Week Wait) comes a full and frank guide to reproductive health.
From the onset of periods and puberty, through egg and sperm production and preparing to conceive naturally, to IVF and assisted conception, in Making Friends with your Fertility Tracey and Sarah tackle them all with warmth and humour. Together they take you on a journey not just exploring what happens when things go well (through intercourse, orgasm and pregnancy), but also looking at situations where conception is not so straightforward, as it isn't for 1 in 6 heterosexual couples experiencing infertility or for those who are single or in same sex relationships and keen to have a baby. And Making Friends with your Fertility is not just for those trying to conceive - it's for all those keen to support them - friends and family, counsellors and healthcare professionals too.
There is clear, concise advice on treatment options such as timed sexual intercourse, IUI and ICSI as well as tips on self-nurturing using alternative therapies, plus guidance on alternate pathways to parenthood such as adoption, fostering and surrogacy. There are case histories and quotes from those keen to share their wisdom and tips on funding and finding a clinic. And for those who decide not to parent, there are insights into accepting the decision to remain child free. Plus, drawing on her extensive clinical experience, Tracey shares new ways of explaining the desire to parent, the importance of fantasy and the significant impact of the unconscious.
The result is a handy, practical primer that makes these complex and sometimes distressing issues less confusing and overwhelming, supporting each individual with sensitivity and honesty so they can 'make friends' with their own fertility, in whatever form that takes.

My Life Rearranged: Musings of an Alzheimer Caregiver
"A stirring book that offers an ideal blend of direction and comfort to fellow caregivers." —Kirkus
Pssst ... is your life being rearranged?
You are not alone. Alzheimer's and dementia will turn your life inside out and upside down. In fact, there are many days you won't know if you are coming or going. Susan Miller knows those days. Her husband was diagnosed with Early-Onset Alzheimer's. She became the long distance caregiver for her father's medical issues, followed by her mother's diagnosis of dementia and then a diagnosis of Alzheimer's for her mother-in-law. After decades of caregiving and years of widowhood, Susan met a wonderful widower, only to discover signs of dementia. My Life Rearranged gives voice to what many caregivers think, but are reluctant to admit.
You will discover:
- The issues of love, loss, responsibility, duty, and self-preservation while navigating the stages of the disease.
- What it's like to struggle with a disease that strikes terror in people's hearts and offers ways to come through intact.
- How to lessen the isolation and loneliness of caregiving, and bring honest insight into the life of a caregiver.
Imagine coming home from the store and laying your package down, only to find it gone thirty minutes later, nowhere to be found.
Imagine looking for your favorite cereal in the morning, not finding it anywhere, and only later when you go to do a load of wash, do you find it.
Imagine living with your spouse of many years, only to awaken one day and find he has turned into a child.
Imagine thinking you are living in a house of cards, or that you are imagining it all, or perhaps it's just a dream and you'll soon awaken, but it's not and you don't.
Imagine repeating this scenario over and over again.
My Life Rearranged will tug at your heart, touch your soul, inspire you, and help you believe in your capabilities.

Playing Doctor: Part One
This heartfelt, hilarious, self-deprecating and candid memoir of stumbling through medical school, takes readers along for the journey of medical school. John's transformation, from an uncertain liberal-arts student into a medical doctor, keeps the pages turning due to his entertaining, unique, and tongue-in cheek storytelling. From the challenge of being accepted into medical school; to memorizing human anatomy using ribald mnemonic devices; to delivering babies, John recounts what really goes on behind clinic doors.
As if medical school was not challenging enough, John survived two traumatic brain injuries right before medical school started, leaving him exhausted, and without much short term memory. Memory and an ability to stay awake are two qualities you might value in medical school. Anyone who has experienced imposter syndrome, the idea that you are a complete fish out a water, or who does not belong, will appreciate John's humor and vulnerability describing not fitting in too well to the academic and professional environment.
Pre-med students might wish an early look into what life might be like training to be a doctor. Anyone who has experienced being treated by a doctor will enjoy seeing the reality of the medical system and how medical professionals are educated.
About the Author
Lawrence, John: - John Lawrence was born in New York, grew up England, and attended Georgetown University where he did not take a single pre-med class; in fact, he told his career advisor that the only thing he did not want to be was a doctor. He subsequently survived medical school and residency training at the University of Utah. John was not the typical medical student, sneaking out of the hospital whilst on-call to audition for television shows in order to pay the rent; writing film scripts, and overcoming a nagging imposter syndrome. John has been a river rafting guide, ski race coach, bagel baker, screenwriter, film director, expedition doctor climbing Kilimanjaro with his close friend, Olympic Hall of Fame athlete, Chris Waddell, (when Chris became the first paraplegic to summit Kilimanjaro un-assisted). John worked as a doctor for 20 years in both traditional western medicine and functional medicine. He enjoys biking, skiing, cooking and watching films with friends and family.

Playing Doctor: Part Two
Playing Doctor: Part Two: Residency is a medical memoir full of laugh-out-loud tales, born from chaotic, disjointed, and frightening nights on hospital wards during John Lawrence's medical training and time as a junior doctor. This candid autobiography will demystify medical education and inspire you. Equal parts heartfelt, self-deprecating humor, and irreverent storytelling, John takes us along for the ride as he tracks his transformation from uncertain, head injured, liberal-arts student to intern, resident and then medical doctor.

Silent Struggle
Katie, a stoic young Native American, faces family pressures, a developing distant romantic relationship, and stress from nursing school clinicals during her junior year at Crestmont University in Dallas.
Her dream of becoming a nurse is challenged when her mother suffers an injury that could force her to stay on the farm, assume her mother's duties, and postpone her education, perhaps permanently. Compounding her stress, Katie's childhood friend and soulmate's demand for a greater level of commitment drives her into an emotional spiral as she tries to balance her dream of becoming a nurse and her love for John.
The academically sound Katie finds that book learning is not sufficient for success in the clinical setting. Her frustration grows as she encounters difficulty in implementing her carefully crafted patient care plans. Her relationship with the Nurseketeers, her best friends and support system, deteriorates as she tries unsuccessfully to cope. She struggles in silence, turning in secret to alcohol to quell the chaos of clinical practice and putting herself in jeopardy of failing out of nursing school.

Viable Hostage
When Malorie witnesses her best friend and roommate leave a campus bar with a mystery date driving a silver Mercedes, she suspects foul play, especially when Lani fails to return home the next day. Both women, med students in their final year at Elliott Bay University, have a lot riding on the line, but due to Lani's wild past, no one in her family is worried. When Malorie's fears for her roommate deepen, she turns to her Uncle Wade, a Sergeant at Seattle Homicide.
Within 48 hours after Lani goes missing, the partial remains of a brutally murdered young woman wash up on Alki Beach, and a human hand is found in a crab pot off Bainbridge Island. When one of the bodies is identified as a pregnant, fourth-year medical student, Wade believes there's a connection with Lani's disappearance. And, that they might be looking for a serial killer.
Malorie suspects Lani's kidnapper is someone they know, possibly even one of their professors at the university, a prominent Seattle anesthesiologist whose wife is the president of EBU. But when Detective Blake Stephenson discovers evidence that links another suspect to the professor's Mercedes, he and Wade must act fast to attempt a wild rescue in the middle of Puget Sound.
